Description
This painting, Saint Ambrose, was created by the Italian Renaissance artist Giovanni di Paolo between roughly 1465 and 1470. The work is a tempera on wood panel featuring a gold ground, a common technique for religious art of that era. It depicts the 4th-century Bishop of Milan, Ambrose, wearing a ceremonial miter adorned with jewels. The painting is currently housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City as part of the Robert Lehman Collection.
