Annunciation with Saint Peter Martyr - Fra Angelico

2/11 - Fra Angelico Series

Bring the quiet reverence of Early Renaissance devotion into your space with this beautiful art print of Annunciation with Saint Peter Martyr by the Italian master Fra Angelico.

This iconic painting captures the profound moment the Archangel Gabriel appears to the Virgin Mary to announce she will give birth to Jesus. Both figures are shown with bowed heads and hands crossed over their chests in a mutual gesture of deep humility and submission. Standing on the far left, partially hidden by a stone pillar, is Saint Peter Martyr, who watches the sacred interaction in silent prayer.

Painted between 1440 and 1445, the original fresco resides in Cell 3 of the Convento di San Marco in Florence, Italy. Fra Angelico deliberately omitted the lavish, ornate details found in typical Renaissance depictions of the Annunciation. By setting the figures within a stark, unadorned stone cloister, the artist created a sense of extreme simplicity meant to foster intense, quiet focus and deep meditation for the Dominican friars who occupied the cell.
