Coronation of the Virgin - Fra Angelico
Description
1/11 - Fra Angelico Series
In the upper portion, Christ gently places a crown upon the head of the Virgin Mary, both enveloped in a radiant, heavenly white light. Below them, six reverent saints, including St. Dominic and St. Francis of Assisi, kneel in deep meditation, acting as witnesses to this sacred event.
Painted between 1440 and 1442, this masterpiece is a faithful reproduction of the original fresco located in Cell 9 of the Convento di San Marco in Florence, Italy. Fra Angelico designed these cell paintings with a deliberately simplified composition and soft, muted tones. Rather than serving as public decoration, they were meant to inspire deep peace, quiet contemplation, and spiritual reflection for the individual monks living there.
