Madonna and Child with Augustine and Thomas - Fra Angelico
Description
11/11 - Fra Angelico Series
Invite the timeless dignity and intellectual depth of Early Renaissance theology into your space with this stunning art print of the Madonna and Child with Saints Augustine and Thomas Aquinas by Italian master Fra Angelico.
This commanding print features a majestic Sacra Conversazione (Sacred Conversation). The Virgin Mary sits enthroned on a raised hexagonal dais, holding the infant Christ, who stands beside her draped in a soft blue tunic and holding a globe representing his dominion. They are framed by a striking, deep red backdrop adorned with delicate gold stars. Flanking the throne are two of Christianity's greatest theologians: on the left stands Saint Augustine in his ornate bishop's vestments and miter holding a crozier, and on the right is Saint Thomas Aquinas in his Dominican robes, displaying an open text with a radiant star shining from his chest to symbolize his divine wisdom.
Painted between 1440 and 1442, this masterpiece is a faithful reproduction of the original fresco located in Cell 11 of the Convento di San Marco in Florence, Italy. Fra Angelico deliberately paired the Virgin and Child with these specific saints to emphasize the intersection of faith, rigorous study, and divine revelation. Created for a Dominican friar's private quarters, the painting's stable, balanced architecture and quiet expressions were designed to inspire deep theological reflection, focused study, and calm daily meditation.
